Keeping Your Gunshot Detection System Performing at Its Best
A Best Practices Guide for SDS Sensors in the Field
Your gunshot detection system plays an important role in safety and situational awareness. Like all electronic safety equipment, it benefits from routine checkups to ensure it continues operating as designed.
This note is a general maintenance reminder and does not indicate a problem with your system.
Recommended System Care
To maintain optimal performance, we recommend periodic review of your system that may include:
- System Health Checks: Ensuring your system is reporting normal status within the SDS software platform
- Sensor Testing: Confirming sensors respond correctly when tested using approved SDS tools (typically performed by your authorized service provider)
- Visual Inspection: Looking for signs of physical wear, environmental exposure, or damage to sensors and cabling
Your authorized SDS dealer can assist with these checks as part of routine maintenance.
About Sensor Longevity
Electronic sensors, like many safety and detection devices (such as fire or intrusion sensors), naturally experience gradual aging due to environmental exposure over time.
For this reason, SDS recommends planning for sensor replacement after approximately 7 years from installation as a best practice for long-term system reliability. Please note:
- This is not an urgent replacement notice
- Sensors that continue to pass testing and system checks may remain in service
- This guidance is intended to support ongoing performance—not to suggest current failure
If you’re unsure of the age of your sensors, your service provider or SDS can help determine this.
What You Should Do Next
- Continue normal operation of your system
- Ensure regular maintenance is part of your safety planning
- Contact your authorized SDS dealer if you would like:
- A system checkup
- Guidance on long-term maintenance planning
- Information about future upgrade or replacement options
